Several area students who received scholarships this spring from The Arvada Rotary Club were the highlight of the annual Rotary picnic that was held Wednesday, July 26 at the pavilion behind the old Jeffco Ice Arena at Ralston Road and Garrison Street. The students and their parents and guardians were guests of the club at the annual barbecue. Each student received a Certificate of Merit from President Jerry Jelinek and enjoyed food provided by Bennet's BBQ. Members of the club mingled with students and their parents to get to know them and wish them well in furthering their education. Those students present were Jessica Cinnamon, of Golden, and her mother, Vickie Petrafeso. Jessica will attend Red Rocks Community College to study videography. Jeff Usher, of Pomona High, was present with his mother, Sharon Usher. He will continue his studies at Red Rocks in construction technology. Kyle Schmidt,of Dakota Ridge, and his parents, Roger and Laura Schmidt, were present. Kyle will attend Arapahoe Community College to study automotive technology. Katherine Blatter, of Arvada West High, and her parents, Ken and Susan Blatter, came to the picnic and had a wonderful time. Tyler will be studying aeronautical engineering at Colorado School of Mines. David Leonard from Arvada High was there with his parents, Mark and Sarah Leonard. David will study at UNC in the fall to begin his pre-med courses as he embarks on a career in medicine. Jessica Lesmeister attended the affair with her grandmother, Mrs. Lynne Heinekamp, and will continue her studies at CSU toward a law degree in the fields of political science and criminal justice with the purpose of representing abused children who have no voice.
