Read to Me This is a take-home reading program where each student takes a different book home to read with their parents each week. Arvada Rotary provides 30 age-appropriate books to each of the 22 kindergarten, first and second grade classes at Allendale, Secrest and Vanderhoof Elementary schools located in Arvada (that's 660 total books!!). Each summer the 22 sets of books are collected, inventoried and all the missing/damaged books replaced and the sets returned to the schools for the new year. Read –to-me This is a heck of a Rotary Program. Not only does it meet everyone of the 4 Way test questions head on, its something that we can feel real good about when ever the thought passes through our mind. Few things in school are quite as important as leaning to read. With it, all things are possible; with out it all things are usually lost. As with most good things it’s a simple program. The grade levels have been predetermined, K thru 2. The schools have been selected. Seacrest, Vanderhoof and Allendale. The schools have worked the program into their systems and they are good to go with the program for quite a period of time. Every fall you drop off the books at the school. The kids read all winter. You pick the books up again in the spring. During the summer you inventory the books, order replacements and get ready to do it again. Not too tough. Now if you want to follow up with the teachers, the students, the parents to see how things are going, to see if there is anything you could be doing to help. Maybe check with some of the other Read -to-Me programs in the district to see if there are any tips you could be implementing that would improve the game. Well now, do that and we are starting to talk, ROTARY. Ravi has been working this program for the club for a number of years and next year he’s taking on another job; he’s going to be the club president and frankly doesn’t have time to do the program right. We need a little help here. Talk with Ravi or King for more details. |
